What to Do When You Feel Like Giving Up (But Don’t Want to)

AsI reflect on my journey from thinking to doing, I can confidently say I’ve gained a significant amount of motivation and have started embracing new habits. If you’re interested in learning more about this journey, I invite you to check out my past blogs: Moving from Thinking to Doing and Why Habits Fail and How to Actually Succeed.

Let’s commit to progressing and not giving up! Like everyone, I was truly inspired by my first blog post, which sparked me to write my second one just the very next day. Exciting, right? However, I soon noticed that my energy began to fade — or perhaps I allowed it to fade, questioning if this was merely a temporary burst of motivation that would eventually diminish.

To my relief, it turns out it’s not just short-term motivation; my heart is still fully engaged in writing these posts. I’m not sure how long this passion will last, but I’m determined to keep it alive.

so to nurture that passion, I found a serene spot close to my house where I can sit and let my thoughts flow freely. The first idea that came to mind was that if I want to sustain my enthusiasm, I need to figure out how to avoid throwing in the towel. This raises an important question for all of us:

why do we want to give up?

There are many reasons that can lead to that decision. In my case, I found myself pondering questions like, “What’s the point of writing this blog? Who’s going to read it? And even if they do, will it really make a difference?”

I think many of you might ask similar questions. I realized I was excessively focused on the results rather than the joy of writing itself.

Instead of dwelling on outcomes, I decided to write and share this blog because I believe there may be someone out there who finds it helpful and develops better habits to overcome their own struggles with giving up.

I know I’m not alone in feeling that urge to give up at times — maybe due to a lack of motivation, insufficient support, or being overly fixated on results.

So, How Do We Hold On When We Want to Let Go?

Personally, I’ve discovered that asking myself questions and seeking answers within can be beneficial, though I realize it may not work for everyone. Here are some tips that I’ve found helpful for perseverance:

  1. Ask yourself questions and seek the answers within.
  2. Learn from setbacks and use them as stepping stones.
  3. Manage your emotions and don’t let them take control.
  4. Don’t hesitate to seek support from others.
  5. Take small, manageable steps instead of overwhelming yourself.
  6. Set a reasonable pace that feels comfortable for you.
  7. Be flexible and open to change.
  8. Develop a routine that works for you.
  9. Celebrate every little step forward, no matter how small.

Final Reflection: Keep Showing Up

Quitting is always loudest when the moment is hardest.

So here’s the rule: Don’t make quitting decisions when you’re tired, sad, or stuck. Make them when you’re calm, clear, and rested.

Until then, just take one small step. Write one sentence. Move your body for two minutes. Drink water and close the app.

Then tomorrow? Do one more thing.

Because momentum isn’t built on good days. It’s built on the days you refused to quit.

Let’s keep pushing forward together! What strategies do you use to stay motivated? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
